Project Update 06/02/2006

* sea katamaran, nets, and tools for Gunaretnam, sponsored by Patisserie Leonard

* keyboard for a music group whose original keyboard was lost in the tsunami. The band suports orphanage boys with the profits of their performances.


The final project will be for students of 3 primary schools in a rural area, which was not affected by the tsunami, but is very poor. The majority of the kids' parents are laborers who can't afford to buy much more than food. What the 483 kids need are shoes, socks, umbrellas (protection against sun and rain), toothbrushes and tooth paste (Jeyaseelan's aunt is a nurse; she will teach them how to brush their teeth), exercise books, pencils and erasers, etc. .

Last donations are very welcome until 20/02/2006!

Bicycle For Electrician Jeyaraj

Today we donated a bicycle to a skillfull, reliable and hard working electrician who has been working for Jeyaseelan on a Sarvodaya housing project. Jeyaraj lost his bike last December and has been needing this independent mode of transportation since.

Jasper's catamaran

With half of the money that Jasper collected we were able to buy this second-hand catamaran. Now P. Vijayakumar is catching fish in the lagoon again. Thank you, Jasper!

Met de helft van het geld dat Jasper inzamelde konden we deze tweedehands katamaran aankopen. P. Vijayakumar kan nu terug vis gaan vangen in het lagoon. Bedankt Jasper!

Ayurvedic Doctor Sudandiran

The home for the mentally ill that Sudandiran, ayurvedic doctor and Hindu priest, used to run close to Kalmunai town was destroyed by the tsunami. This left him without means to continue his medical practice. For some time he had to borrow things from his coleagues. Then Jeyaseelan got to know Sudandiran, found out about his needs, told me his story and we decided to donate the essential things for his practice: medicine, oils, equipment, furniture,... Now Sudandiran is running his practice without major difficulties and is supporting his wife and three children with the money he is earning once again.

Goldsmiths - Goudsmeden

In the end of September goldsmiths Sathishkumar and Yasokumar, both youth friends of Jeyaseelan's, asked him if he could help them to get goldsmith tools again through his contacts.

Because everybody thinks goldsmiths are rich they were overlooked by aid workers and they have been forced to work with insufficient borrowed materials ever since the tsunami.
In order to make a living they need a whole series of things but their income isn't big enough to buy them in a relatively short period of time. Making quick money in construction is not an option because that would cause them to lose their market.

During a few weeks we met them regularly and Jeyaseelan checked their actual situation.
At our request they organized a pricelist of goldsmith tools from which we selected the most important and expensive items together. They are willing and able to purchase the cheaper items like tweezers, little hammers, and carat stamps themselves.

We let Sathishkumar and Yasokumar order the materials from a dealer in Colombo and after the delivery last week, we checked the receipt and handed over the manual scales, blowers, pliers etc. on 01/11.

Paul Van Geel's, Willy Speder's and Evi & Wim's donations are giving these two hard working young men invaluable support.

Eind september kreeg Jeyaseelan de vraag van de goudsmeden Sathishkumar en Yasokumar, allebei jeugdvrienden van hem, of hij hen via zijn contacten terug aan goudsmidgereedschap kon helpen.
Omdat iedereen denkt dat goudsmeden rijk zijn, werden ze over het hoofd gezien door hulpverleners en oefenden ze hun beroep sinds de tsunami noodgedwongen uit met ontoereikend geleend materiaal.

Om hun kost te verdienen hadden ze een hele reeks dingen nodig, maar hun inkomen was/is niet groot genoeg om die op relatief korte termijn aan te kopen.
Snel geld verdienen in de bouw was geen optie omdat ze dan hun markt zouden verliezen.

Gedurende enkele weken spraken we regelmatig met hen af en checkte Jeyaseelan hun situatie.
Op ons verzoek zorgden Sathishkumar en Yasokumar voor een prijslijst van goudsmidgereedschap waaruit we samen de belangrijkste en duurdere benodigdheden selecteerden.
Goedkopere dingen zoals pincetten, hamertjes en karaatstempels willen en kunnen ze zelf kopen.

We lieten hen de materialen bestellen bij een verdeler in Colombo en na de levering vorige week keken we op 1 november de rekening na en overhandigden we de manuele weegschalen, blazers, tangen enz.

De donaties van Paul Van Geel, Willy Speder en Evi & Wim geven deze twee hardwerkende jonge mannen onschatbare steun.

Since the end of July I have been volunteering on an SCI (Service Civil International) workcamp in Kalmunai, a small Tamil/Muslim town on the East coast.

Jeyaseelan, a Sri Lankan friend who I trust for 100% and who works for a local NGO called 'Sarvodaya' is helping me to find individual tsunami victims who still need help. After 2 months of anticipation things are starting to happen now.

On 19/09 we had a meeting with 11 fishermen who claimed they hadn't received any assistance from the government. I would have bought nets for them straight away but Jeyaseelan found out through Sarvodaya that some of them had already received and sold boats. For crying out loud. It will take a few more weeks to find out the real story about those fishermen...

From now on I want to help fishermen, but also doctors, goldsmiths etc. whose stories have been double checked by Jeyaseelan.Numbers 1 and 2 on our list right now: an ayurvedic doctor and a lagoon fisherman Jayseelan introduced me to last week.

1. The doctor, Sudandiran, is specialized in a.o. mental illnesses, is successful and has an important role in the community. He needs materials for his practice because he lost almost everything. Books about ayurvedic medicine, cupboard for the medicines, small bed for patients, different kinds and sizes of mortars and pestels, stethoscope, scale,... I'll use the 250 euros Guy Dockx donated to buy these items for him.

2. The lagoon fisherman needs a small catamaran. We sent him on a mission to find a suitable boat which we will buy with the money Jasper raised. Great. I will let you know which donations I'll buy the nets for his boat with.

Sinds eind juli werk ik als vrijwilligster op een SCI (Service Civil International)werkkamp in Kalmunai, een Tamil/Moslim stadje aan de oostkust.

Jeyaseelan, een Sri Lankaanse vriend die ik voor 100% vertrouw en die voor de plaatselijke NGO 'Sarvodaya' werkt, helpt mij om individuele tsunami-slachtoffers te vinden die nog hulp nodig hebben. Na 2 maanden begint er schot in de zaak te komen.

Op 19/09 hadden we een bijeenkomst met 11 vissers die naar eigen zeggen geen hulp van de overheid gekregen hadden. Ik zou al meteen netten voor hen gekocht hebben, maar Jeyaseelan kwam via Sarvodaya te weten dat sommigen al boten ontvangen en doorverkocht hadden. Om zot te worden! Dus: een paar weken wachten op "De Echte Waarheid" (zelfs in Kalmunai lopen er Getuigen van Jehova rond...) over die 11 vissers.

Vanaf nu wil ik vissers, maar ook dokters, goudsmeden enz. selecteren waarvan Jeyaseelan de verhalen gecontroleerd heeft. Voorlopige nummers 1 en 2 op de lijst: een ayurvedische dokter en een lagoonvisser die Jeyaseelan vorige week allebei aan mij voorgesteld heeft.

1. De dokter , Sudandiran, is gespecialiseerd in o.a. geestesziekten, boekt goede resultaten en heeft een belangrijke functie in de gemeenschap. Hij heeft een hele lijst dingen nodig voor zijn praktijk omdat hij bijna alles kwijt is. Boeken over ayurvedische geneeskunde, medicijnenkast, kruiden, poeders, verschillende soorten en maten vijzels, weegschaal, stethoscoop, bedje voor patienten, ... Voor hem zal ik de 250 euro die Guy Dockx geschonken heeft, gebruiken.

2. De lagoonvisser heeft een kleine katamaran nodig. We hebben hem de opdracht gegeven om zelf op zoek te gaan naar een geschikt bootje en dat kopen we dan voor hem met het geld dat Jasper ingezameld heeft. Super. Ik laat jullie weten welke donaties ik zal gebruiken voor de bijbehorende netten.

The Project

When the tsunami hit a large part of the coasts of South-east Asia, I was staying in New Zealand. Affected by the enormous distress I left for the Tsunami Volunteer Center in Khao Lak, Thailand in February.
During 10 days I participated in the 'Thaikea project' where Thai and international volunteers are making furniture for schools.

On a visit to the tsunami victim camp in Baan Prutiew I had an unforgettable conversation with Tanakron, and his wife Lumpa, both tsunami victims. Words can not express their sadness, misery and powerlessness.
All they can do is wait...

I'm in contact with Tim Biot, a Belgian man who is doing tsunami relief work in Hikkadua on Sri Lanka's west coast as we speak. I'll start volunteering in the same place in June 2005.

Tim's reliable eyewitness reports informed me about the needs of many families which, after 3 months, still haven't been met by their government. Essential things like proper shelter, vegetables, clothing and especially... fishing boats.

My goal: raising the money for at least 30 fishing boats including equipment so that the fishing families can build up their lives again.
One completely equipped fishing boat costs €800 euro
One fishing net: €80 euro (10 nets per boat)
One fully equipped fishing boat can provide 4 families with an income.

I will personally see to it, on the spot, that boats get repaired, built, and purchased in close collaboration with the local community and experienced volunteers like Tim Biot.
All fundraising initiatives are more than welcome!

Your money goes directly to the project. I will take care of my own travel and accommodation expenses.

Het Project

Op het moment dat de tsunami een groot deel van de kusten van Zuidoost-Azië verwoestte, verbleef ik in Nieuw-Zeeland. Gegrepen door de enorme nood vertrok ik in februari naar het Tsunami Volunteer Center in Khao Lak, Thailand. Gedurende 10 dagen werkte ik er mee aan het 'Thaikea project' waar Thaise en internationale vrijwilligers schoolmeubels vervaardigen.

Tijdens een bezoek aan het tsunami-slachtofferkamp in Baan Prutiew had ik een onvergetelijk gesprek met Tanakron en zijn vrouw Lumpa, allebei tsunami-slachtoffers. Woorden kunnen niet uitdrukken hoe groot de droefenis en ellende ter plaatse zijn.
Machteloos wachten de mensen af...

Ik heb contact met Tim Biot, een Belgische man die op dit moment hulp verleent in Hikkadua, aan de westkust van Sri Lanka, de plaats waar ik me vanaf juni 2005 ook als vrijwilliger zal inzetten. Zijn betrouwbare ooggetuigeverslagen informeerden mij over de behoeften van vele families waarin na drie maanden nog altijd niet door hun regering is voorzien.
Essentiële dingen zoals degelijk onderdak, groenten, kleding en vooral... vissersboten.

Mijn doel: het geld inzamelen voor minstens 30 vissersboten incl. uitrusting zodat de vissersfamilies hun leven zelf terug kunnen opbouwen.
Eén compleet uitgeruste vissersboot kost €800 euro
Eén vissersnet kost €80 euro (10 netten per boot)
Met één compleet uitgeruste vissersboot kunnen vier families in hun eigen onderhoud voorzien.

Ik zal er ter plaatse persoonlijk voor zorgen dat de boten gebouwd, hersteld en aangekocht worden in nauwe samenwerking met de plaatselijke bevolking en ervaren vrijwilligers zoals Tim Biot.
Alle geldinzamelingsinitiatieven zijn meer dan welkom!

Ik financier zelf mijn reis-en verblijfskosten. Uw geld gaat integraal en rechtstreeks naar het project.

Le Projet

Au moment où le tsunami frappait une grande partie des côtes du Sud-Est Asiatique, je me trouvais en Nouvelle Zélande. Affectée par l’énorme détresse des victimes, je suis partie rejoindre le Centre des Bénévoles Tsunami à Khao Lak, en Thaïlande, au mois de février. Pendant 10 jours, j’y ai participé au 'Projet Thaikea', projet où des bénévoles Thaï et internationaux fabriquent des meubles d’école.

Lors d’une visite au camp des victimes-tsunami à Baan Prutiew, j’ai eu une conversation inoubliable avec Tanakron et son épouse Lumpa, tous deux victimes du tsunami. Aucun mot ne saura exprimer la détresse, la misère, le chagrin des gens là-bas. Impuissants, ils ne peuvent malheureusement rien faire d’autre qu’attendre.....

Je suis en contact avec Tim Biot, un Belge qui est engagé actuellement, et expérimenté, dans l’assistance et le secours à Hikkadua, sur la côte ouest du Sri Lanka. C’est à ce même endroit qu’en juin 2005 je commencerai mon travail de bénévole.

Les rapports fiables de Tim Biot, témoin oculaire de l’évolution de la situation là-bas, m’ont informé des besoins essentiels des nombreuses familles pour lesquels le gouvernement, au bout de 3 longs mois, n’a toujours pas trouvé de solution ; des besoins indispensables tels que : des abris convenables, des légumes, des vêtements, et surtout... des bateaux de pêche.

Mon but est de collecter une somme d’argent pour au moins 30 bateaux de pêche, équipements compris, de manière à ce que les familles des pêcheurs puissent à nouveau organiser et construire leur vie eux-mêmes.Un bateau de pêche entièrement équipé donne un revenu à 4 familles, leur permettant ainsi de subvenir à nouveau à leurs propres besoins.
Un bateau de pêche coûte 800 euro
Un filet de pêche coûte 80 euro (10 filets par bateau)

Je m’engage personnellement à veiller là-bas sur place à l’achat, la construction, la réparation et l’entretien des bateaux, en étroite collaboration avec la communauté locale et les bénévoles expérimentés comme Tim Biot.

Toutes les initiatives de collecte d’argent sont les bienvenues!

Votre argent va directement et intégralement au Projet. Je finance moi-même mes propres frais de voyage et de logement.
